  4. Source: Population estimates for 2012 are based projections of 2009 census. Age specific fertility rates (ASFRs) obtained from the 2008/9 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) were applied to the projected 2012 population of women by five-year age groups to estimate number of births in 2012. Proportion of unplanned births (unwanted or mistimed, also from the 2008/9 KDHS) was applied to total 2012 projected number of births (nationally and by region) to obtain the number of unplanned births in 2012
